RECOMMENDATIONS AND STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVEMENT

Since we are working on this assignment for two weeks, I will focus this week on making sure you’ve accurately followed the assignment guidelines and next week I will take a closer look at essay development, sentence structure and grammar.

The purpose of the My Strategy essay is to transition from what you stated as your opinion on a controversial topic in the I Believe essay, to explaining your strategy for proving what you believe in your upcoming research paper.

What’s your plan of attack?

Let’s look again at the assignment guidelines: (I’ve listed it here for your convenience)

WHAT: Write an essay in which you describe the potential research strategies, arguments, and ideas you will use to develop your upcoming 10-page research-based persuasive essay.

HOW: BRAINSTORM: Choose an issue about which you feel passionate—an issue where you see a need or a problem to be solved. You will later base your annotated bibliography and your persuasive essay on this topic, so choose carefully!

THESIS: I plan to research ________________________, ___________________, and ______________________ sources in order to define (PROBLEM or NEED) ____________________________________________________________________ and propose (WHO OR WHAT) ____________________________________ implement solutions of _____________________________________________________________________.

RHETORICAL STRUCTURE: In EACH of the sections below, remember to include potential sources of information you intend to research (meaning: sources you still need to find) and actual sources of information you are using to inform your argument now (meaning: you found these recently and have thought about and/or analyzed them). Organize your essay as follows:

INTRODUCTION: Hook your reader with sentences showing the urgency of the problem or need, and close with your thesis statement.

STATEMENT of the PROBLEM or NEED: What do you think the problem or need is? What information do you need to discover about the problem or need? Where do you intend to discover that information?

POTENTIAL CAUSES OF THE PROBLEM OR NEED: What do you think caused the problem or need is? What information do you need to discover about cause of the problem or need? Where do you intend to discover that information?

POTENTIAL SOLUTIONS TO THE PROBLEM OR WAYS TO SATISFY THE NEED: What do you think can solve the problem or satisfy the need? What information do you need to discover about solving the problem or satisfying the need? Where do you intend to discover that information?

POTENTIAL ACTORS TO SOLVE PROBLEM OR SATISFY NEED: Which potential people, institutions, or organizations, including political bodies, can take action to implement the solution or satisfy the need?

Now – let’s break down each part and see what you still need to provide in order to adhere to the guidelines.

Introduction:

After you’ve grabbed the readers’ attention by explaining that bullying is becoming more severe and has serious effects on those who are on the receiving end, you must ensure that you have a strong thesis that provides a focus for what you wish to accomplish and how you will do so.

Thesis – (at the end of the introduction) that should move from what you believe (communicated in your last essay) to how you are going to pursue this information and argue your point. Guide the reader to the purpose of your essay.Be certain that your thesis statement includes your plan as to how to present your argument

YOU SAY:

“Therefore, it is for this reason that the following analysis seeks to investigate and analyze the effects of bullying in a high school setting. Additionally, the above results will go-ahead to form the basis for finding the underlying cause of the menace and fining solutions to the same. The problem at hand points to the rampant bullying cases that exist in schools, and it is essential to get to the root of it.”

Let’s see how we can make that stronger/clearer: (1: feel free to use this as a starting point 2: this should be the very last sentence in your introduction)

“I plan to research (WHAT SOURCES??INSERT THEM HERE) in order to determine why bullying in high school is rampant by closely examining the root causes and proposing that academic institutions implement a clear consequence and a zero-tolerance environment.”

From there, you would transition into the body of your essay.

  • You have presented a solution to solve the problem.THE FOLLOWING IS MISSING:
    • What info will you need to find in order to be able to support your theory on how the problem can be solved?
    • Where will you look for this information?

POTENTIAL ACTIONS TO SOLVE PROBLEM OR SATISFY NEED: Which potential people, institutions, or organizations, including political bodies, can take action to implement the solution or satisfy the need?

  • You MUST be more specific here.Who has to power to enact the change that you believe needs to happen?

Conclusion:

Conclude with a paragraph that reiterates how you will be approaching your upcoming, lengthy assignment.Be sure to connect back to the thesis.

Mapping out a research strategy:

A research strategy is a systematic plan for tracking down sources. To create a research strategy appropriate for your research topic, consult a reference librarian and . . . take a look at your library’s Web site, which will give you an overview of available resources.

The more specifically you can think about this, the easier it will be to draft your annotated bibliography and ultimately accumulate resources for the research paper.

ØHow are you going to find information to back your claim??

ØWhat specific types of resources will have the information you need to support your argument?WHERE exactly will you find it?What website? What books?What periodicals?

ØWHY??

Kinds of sources I will use and why they will benefit my paper:Answer these questions:

ØDo you have a balanced variety of sources?

ØWhat strengths will they lend to the paper?

ØHow will they help clarify points you want to make? Use a combination of sources.

Remember, this is like a blueprint or a plan to help you approach your 10-page research project.By zeroing in on a concrete strategy, the process of writing the research paper will seem less daunting.

*** It is also important to remember that this essay is much less about expressing your opinion and much more about how you are going to support what you believe – what steps will you take?What research will you use?What’s the plan?

TRANSITIONS:

Transitions between paragraphs should be a bit more cohesive.Try this strategy (may have provided it last time as well).By using this revision strategy, it should help to connect your paragraphs in a smoother way.

KEYWORD BRIDGE Transition sentences make connections, or “build bridges,” between the main idea of the body paragraph you are working on, the main idea of the next, upcoming paragraph, and the thesis statement.

Circle the keywords in your thesis, the topic sentence of the paragraph you are working on, and the topic sentence of your next, upcoming paragraph.

Choose at least one keyword from each: (topic sentence, thesis, and upcoming topic sentence) and…

Combine them with a transitional word (ex: thus, therefore, however, although, and so, furthermore, moreover, etc.). This is your transition sentence!
